Celebrating Our Section’s Remarkable Year
What an extraordinary year we’ve had! As I sit down to write this week’s newsletter, I can’t help but feel energized by everything your Section has accomplished – and I want to share that excitement with all 6,566 of you.
A Year of Outstanding Growth and Impact
Let me paint the picture of what you achieved this year: you more than doubled our Fund Balance while simultaneously reducing expenses by $290,000. You exceeded our sponsorship goals by $100,000, demonstrating the value our community brings to partners across the legal industry. Most impressively, you grew our membership from 5,810 to 6,566 – an 11% increase that reflects the magnetic pull of what we’re building together.
Knowledge Leadership That Matters
Your commitment to learning produced 34 CLEs this year alongside our Signature Events that continued to draw capacity crowds. But you didn’t stop at education – you actively shaped the legal landscape by helping the Florida Legislature pass four critical bills benefiting the business community and by playing a pivotal role in revisions to the Florida Rules of Civil Procedure.
Leading the Legal Conversation
From bankruptcy and business litigation to intellectual property, digital assets, technology law, corporate governance, and financial services law – you continued to be the thought leaders setting the pace for Florida’s legal community. Your expertise and insights don’t just serve your clients; they elevate our entire profession.
Collegiality and Family
And on top of all that, you took the opportunity for us to get together and enjoy each other’s company. You participated in numerous opportunities to catch up, from individual meet-ups to our Signature Events, to the Spring Trip, to the “o.g. big daddy” of them all: the Labor Day Retreat. And yes, you’re still celebrating that Stanley Cup win, even if our hockey game in Canada didn’t go quite as planned!
The Power of Service
Which brings me to something I’ve been reflecting on throughout this remarkable year. We often talk about professional success, but I want to highlight something equally important and why you have helped the Section be so successful: the transformative power of service.
Martin Luther King Jr. reminded us that “Everybody can be great because everybody can serve.” Mahatma Gandhi taught us that “The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others”. Mother Teresa emphasized giving “your hands to serve, and your hearts to love,” and Muhammad Ali captured the essence perfectly: “Service to others is the rent you pay for your room here on earth.”
But here’s what those great leaders didn’t explicitly say – and what we’ve all learned through our Section’s work: service gives the person serving as much as the person being served.
The Power of Gratitude
Every committee meeting, every CLE you’ve organized, every legislative initiative you’ve supported – these weren’t just professional obligations. These were opportunities to contribute to something larger than ourselves, to be part of a community that makes a real difference in Florida’s business legal landscape.
To every committee chair who stepped up, every member who shared expertise, every volunteer who gave their time – you transformed not just our Section, but yourselves through service. That’s the real magic of what we do together.
Looking Forward
As we head into our next chapter, I encourage each of you to find your own opportunities to serve within our Section family. Whether it’s joining a committee, contributing to our CLEs, or mentoring newer members, remember that service isn’t just about what you give – it’s also about what you gain in return.
Thank you for your service, and thank you for being the driving force behind everything our Section accomplishes. Here’s to continued success and service in the year ahead!
